Thomas L. Knabel, M.D., is vice president, Medical Informatics at Ingenix Consulting, where he leads efforts to provide best of class solutions to provider and payer issues across the spectrum of medical management. He joined Ingenix from OptumHealth, where he supported and developed the value proposition across the spectrum of Optum products, including case and disease management, a nurse line, and treatment decision support. While at OptumHealth, he provided industry leadership in disease management outcomes measurement through his work on the DMAA Outcomes Steering Committee.

Previously, Dr. Knabel guided the development of clinical decision management and support tools at Ingenix. He consulted with health plans on using these tools to change physician and patient behavior to improve the quality and efficiency of care.

Dr. Knabel also served as national medical director of Provider Performance Management for UnitedHealthcare, and as medical director for Quality and Utilization Management for the HealthPartners Medical Group and Clinics in Minnesota.

A family physician with 18 years of clinical practice, Dr. Knabel has particular interest in applying technology to assess physician practices and to drive efficient use of resources. Dr. Knabel received a Bachelor of Science degree in Life Sciences from the U.S. Air Force Academy and an M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Practice and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
