Leverage your operational and financial metrics

All indications point to CMS changing to a severity-adjusted DRG on October 1. As your organization begins using severity-adjusted DRGs, you will want to understand what they’ve achieved by leveraging your financial and operational metrics. On a regular basis you should:

• Model actual claims experience to determine if cost and quality objectives are being maintained.
• Conduct training and education at regularly scheduled intervals. It is critical to not treat severity-adjusted DRGs as a “one-time” deliverable. Changing market forces and regulatory requirements make periodic education critical.
• Conduct ongoing coding and documentation audits. Both concurrent and retrospective audits should be put in place.
